Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, also known as Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI), is the first step towards licensure as a professional engineer in the United States, Canada, Emirate of Sharjah, Egypt, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Turkey. The students who are enrolled in an engineering program with an ABET accreditation or have an engineering degree are allowed to sit for the FE exam. ABET is a non-governmental and non-profit agency that grants accreditation to college programs in many fields, such as applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.
Students who don't have an engineering degree are also allowed to take the FE exam as long as they have some years of experience in the engineering field. With that being said, the FE requirements differ from one state to another. So if you have no engineering background and you are interested in taking the FE exam, you should contact the NCEES to find out more about the prerequisites. Also, if you want to take the FE exam but you graduated outside the United States, your credentials may have to be evaluated by NCEES depending on your state. The exam is offered in seven disciplines: chemical, civil, electrical and computer, mechanical, environmental, industrial and systems, and other disciplines.
The exam (and licensure) is managed by NCEES, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. It’s an organization dedicated to licensing engineers and surveyors in the United States. It’s headquartered in South Carolina and operates all over the country. The NCEES’s board is also responsible for administering the PE and SE; the remaining engineering exams in the licensure process.
Sitting for the FE exam is extremely important as it evaluates and tests the student’s academic knowledge. The exam covers topics that are taught in an EAC/ABET-accredited B.S. engineering program. In addition, passing the FE exam increases the chances of getting a job in the engineering field. Therefore, it’s advisable to take the FE exam as soon as you graduate.
